Phillip Island, Race: Baldolini Shows Front Running Pace In World Supersport Opener, Pizzoli crashes

Alex Baldolini should have left the opening round of the 2017 Supersport World Championship with more than the 3 points that he collected, after leading the race in the early stages of the initial start and front running throughout of the shortened 10 lap restart.

Qualifying a strong 6th aboard his Race Department ATK25 MV Agusta Baldo looked to be heading for a podium finish until a crash involving two of his rivals sent him onto the grass losing what would have been at worse a 3rd place finish.

Despite being classified 13th Alex can move onto to Buriram in Thailand for round two in a fortnight with the confidence he can be a contender for the remainder of the season.

On the opposite side of the garage WorldSSP Davide Pizzoli made solid progress throughout the weekend and can also look forward with optimism for the rest of the season.

Alex Baldolini (13th): "I'm really angry, in the first crash it was my fault but not in the second one. I saw Jules bike coming into me and i tried to avoid the bike losing less time but i lost the front and with this the podium I am sure I would have got. I gave everything i had and I battled in the correct way during all the race but I recieved overtakings which where not 100% correct and I lost some positions. However, I could always overtake again and go back to the first three positionsIt's a pity all our work ended up like this, we deserved the podium. We worked so hard during the tests and even yesterday to find a good setting for our new Bitubo suspensions and we really find a good one for the race. My bike was just perfect and I knew a win was possible. I have to keep in mind the positive things from that race: I know the red flag helped me and I had a second chance after my mistake while I was leading the race. I really thank all the people of my team that had worked so much during this week in Australia and I had my bike fixed in a few minutes. I really wish to pay back all this effort as soon as possible, my crew deserves it. See you in Thailand!"

Davide Pizzoli (DNF): "I did a good start on the first race and I was 15th but unfortunately the race was redflagged and we had to come back to the pits. In the second start I did it better than in the first one and I was within the group but due to the bad grip to which I'm not yet use to I started to have problems with the front and after three laps I crashed. It's the first race of the championship and there are 11 to go to do a better job, improve and gain experience."
